²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Lecture - Alan Rusbridger

On Tuesday, we were honoured to be joined by Alan Rusbridger, former Editor of the Guardian from 1995 to 2015, who during his tenure contributed to several historic moments in British journalism, including the Leveson Inquiry into the News International phone hacking scandal and the publication of WikiLeaks’ documentation in the mainstream media.
Alan’s involvement in the publication of WikiLeaks’ documentation was dramatised in the 2013 film The Fifth Estate where he was portrayed by Peter Capaldi. Alan delivered a ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Lecture titled Comment is free, facts are expensive. Living in a world where anything goes, in which he carried out an analysis of various publications’ leading stories throughout history, demonstrating that the British media has moved away from publishing hard-hitting facts, towards comment, speculation and public mockery, largely in response to social media.
Pupils greatly appreciated the opportunity to hear one of Britain’s most influential journalists discuss the issues of our time and how the media could course correct from its current position. We are very grateful to Alan for taking time from his busy schedule to come and speak to the pupils.
